Two men – aged 25 and 29 – have been arrested after two cars were clocked reaching speeds of up to 90mph in Birmingham.

The cars were spotted in the Nechells area and were stopped on Heartlands Parkway on Sunday. They will appear in the High Court on June 3.

There is a street racing ordinance covering Birmingham and the Black Country.

Since an interim injunction was obtained in December 2022 and more recently a further High Court injunction was secured in February this year, 29 street racers have been arrested for breaching the injunction.

In addition to the two arrests on Sunday, eight motor vehicles were stopped, 16 section 59 warnings issued. Section 59 notices give the police the power to impound vehicles driven in anti-social behaviour. 15 drivers were also charged with various offenses ranging from dangerous driving to illegally tinted windows.

DC Mark Campbell, from Op Hercules, said: “We need drivers to understand that we will not tolerate illegal street racing or cruising on the region’s roads and will take action against drivers who break the law and put other road users at risk.

“Our ultimate goal is to keep people safe. People have been killed and seriously injured in street racing and it is simply unacceptable to endanger other drivers in such a reckless manner.

“We are working closely with our partners on a range of tactics to identify, disrupt and enforce those who participate or observe. Our priority is keeping the roads safe for everyone.”
