Royal Enfield – Will the Scram 450 be the next model from the Indian manufacturer?

Royal Enfield has made no secret of the fact that the new platform consisting of the 452cc engine that debuted with the new Himalayan is destined for great things: especially because in India, which we have to accept, like it or not, as a universe where volumes are n times higher than in Portugal, the market is evolving towards more powerful and complete motorcycles. It is true that there are and will continue to be simple and very cheap vehicles that in some cases are the backbone of private transport in the subcontinent, but a certain type of customer wants more, and bikes like the Himalayan 450 or the Hero XPulse 440 ( which, according to rumors, is about to be revealed) are the ideal “premium” update of the highly successful models.

It all means that it makes sense, as well as being predictable, that the 452cc, liquid-cooled, 40bhp engine that powers Royal Enfield’s Adventure will be fitted to other future models in the production line. One of them could be what we see in the photo published by Rushlane, which shows a roadster equipped with the Himalayan 450 engine. It would be natural to think that, like the 411cc air-cooled version, the Adventure would be derived a Scrambler, but some details do not fully suit us.

The Scram 411 is actually similar in many areas to the Himalayan 411, except for the 19-inch spoked front wheel and little else that changes its character in a slightly more road-oriented direction. The same operation, if you look at these photos, does not seem to be done with the prototype captured by photographers in India. The first thing that immediately stands out is that the wheels are alloy, the second is that the diameter of the front rim is 17 inches (it could be 18, the photo could also be misleading, but we tend to rule out this possibility). All of these features don’t sit well with the ‘Scram’ moniker, which should – if the Himalayan derivation concept goes by – feature spoked rims and a 19-inch front wheel diameter.

So what? Our opinion – ready to be contradicted – is different and starts from the consideration that it is not certain that Royal Enfield will follow a linear path in defining new models. On the one hand, they could put the Scram name on a bike like this, on the other hand, we believe that the Indian manufacturer has a platform on its hands that is destined to last for many years, and could explore the market with a roadster (in which case we would see the hypothetical name “Super HNTR”) or other bikes ready to surprise us. For example, the Hero Mavrik 440 (and its Harley-Davidson X440 counterpart) have already appeared in the Indian market, repositioning the roadster concept in a larger displacement than the 300/350cc Honda H’ness. What is certain is that the prototype seems to be in a good phase of definition with the traditional forks, instruments borrowed from the Himalayas as well as – it seems – the brake system and the one-piece seat, We will see what comes next from Royal Enfield. the liquid cooled model will be.
