Cleaning expert shares a simple trick to prevent your black clothes from fading | Leicestershire Live

The disappointment of seeing your favorite black jeans fade is a familiar experience – but it’s not inevitable that the natural dye will bleed away until they appear gray and washed out. Black clothes are prone to discoloration due to the type of dye used.

Factors such as hot water, harsh detergents and frequent washing can cause color to fade over time, however there are steps you can take to prevent this. Known online as Madame Sweat, Mary Futher regularly shares her cleaning and personal hygiene tips and tricks on social media.

In a recent TikTok video, Mary revealed a hack she describes as “the easiest way to keep black clothes from fading.” Instead of buying expensive cleaning products, the content creator suggested using two “natural” items you probably already have in your kitchen cupboard.

In the video, which has been viewed more than 865,000 times, Mary advised: “Two natural things you already have in your kitchen. Either vinegar or salt”.

“Put 1/4 cup of vinegar in the drum with your detergent, it helps set the paint. Or you can use salt, but you will need 1/2 cup of salt and sprinkle it on the black. And don’t forget, water temperature is essential. So wash them in cold water and put the washing machine on high,” reports the Mirror.

“And the other big tip, never put them in the dryer. You have to get a drying rack. Don’t put it outside. Leave it in the toilet or laundry room to dry.”

If you’re missing white vinegar or salt from your kitchen, don’t worry, they’re an easy addition to your weekly trip to the supermarket. Alternatively, for those who prefer the convenience of online shopping, a 5L bottle of Pride White Vinegar is available on Amazon for £6.99 and a 750g packet of Saxa Table Salt for just £1.70.
