Great Manchester Run 2024: Road closures this weekend

Thousands of runners will take to the city center this weekend for the Great Manchester Run. Taking place on Sunday, 30,000 people are expected to take part, while many more will walk the streets in a show of support.

Both the 10k and half marathon events take place on Sunday, May 26, with start times staggered throughout the day. The race – one of Europe’s biggest races – will be broadcast on the BBC from 11am to 1pm.




Last year, the huge running event celebrated its 20th anniversary with . The four-time gold medalist completed the race for the final time after confirming he will retire from elite competition after the AJ Bell Great North event in September 2023.

Paul Foster, chief executive of The Great Run Company, said: “Over 30,000 runners are signed up to take part in the famous 10km Great Manchester Half Marathon event on Sunday 26th May, with over 100,000 spectators expected to cover the streets. , runners roar from start to finish.

“Not only is the event broadcast live on BBC One to millions, but there’s an electric atmosphere from start to finish, with live bands, charity milestones and tens of thousands of supporters cheering along.”

A Junior and Mini Great Manchester Run will take place at the Etihad Campus tomorrow (May 25). Those aged 3-16 will take on a 1.6km race, while junior runners (9-15) will take on a 2.5km challenge.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, the action kicks off on Portland Street with the Elite Wheelchair Race at 8.15am, followed by the AJ Bell Great Manchester Half Marathon at 8.20am.
