Burger Boi can’t write, but he can cook a burger

I had a Burger Boi burger and it was everything a burger should be – fatty, salty and almost cooked, like it was grilled. Reviewing yet another not-so-cheap meal, I was hoping I could come up with something critical to say about the £10 American Ox burger as I bit through the bun, meat, pickles and onions.

But it certainly wouldn’t be a wasted ten. It was epic.

The restaurant is across the road and up the hill a short distance from Leicester train station and was recommended to me by my Uber app which had noticed that I had eaten a few expensive burgers recently. Despite cycling through the city centre, he arrived nice and warm, well wrapped up.

The American Boi is what’s known as a “smashed” burger, so between the two halves of the bun it’s just a mess of deliciousness held together in a nice soup of melted fat and cheese. The first good point was that the beef was well cooked to have a nice crust on the outside – taken almost to searing, but not quite.

The pickles were also taken all the way to juicy, black, sweet-flavored morsels. And the fried onion slices were a little crunchy too, giving the whole thing a great texture. There was some lettuce in there too, apparently.

It wasn’t the biggest burger, but that didn’t matter to me because I had ordered a lot of extras. Firstly there were sweet potato fries which cost £4.25 for a portion which I didn’t like.

I don’t think they were made badly, I think I probably just don’t like sweet fries – they’re all mushy, soggy and fruity, when what you want is salty, dry and crunchy.
