Warning for drivers in Leicester as overnight closures are planned for the busy road in the city

Motorists are being warned of a number of road closures overnight on a busy Leicester route. Leicester City Council said it will close part of St Margaret’s Way for three nights in late May and early June.

The road will be closed to inbound traffic between Abbey Park Road and Riverside Park/St Margaret’s Pasture. The closings will be from 21:00, Friday, May 31; Monday, June 3 and Tuesday, June 4.

The road will reopen to traffic at 5 am the following morning. The council said there would be “short, well-signed diversions” taking motorists via Abbey Park Road, Belgrave Gate and Burleys Way.

The closures are necessary to allow “essential bridge maintenance work” to be carried out at the St Margaret’s Way River Bridge, the authority added. This will include repairing vehicle damage to the bridge parapets.

A Leicester City Council spokesman said: “These overnight closures are necessary while essential maintenance and repair work is carried out on the St Margaret’s Way river bridge. The work will take place over three nights to minimize disruption to traffic on this busy route.”
