Leeds United to challenge Newcastle for Celtic star Matt O’Riley

Leeds United are reportedly monitoring Celtic star Matt O’Riley ahead of the summer transfer window and could make a move official if they secure promotion to the Premier League.

Daniel Farke’s men take on Southampton in the Championship Play-Off final at Wembley on Sunday and the Yorkshire club will need to strengthen their squad if they are to progress.

Matt O’Riley has become a target for Leeds ahead of the 2024/25 season, but the 23-year-old is also wanted by Newcastle and Leicester City, reports The Chronicle.

The Tyneside club have scouted the Danish star and are in the strongest position to sign the midfielder given their current Premier League status. This summer is a big one for Eddie Howe’s side and if they sign O’Riley, he is likely to be one of several players to arrive at St James’ Park.

As for Leeds, the Celtic star would be a great addition to their squad, but they need to get promoted first if they are to have any chance of signing the 23-year-old.

It’s not hard to see why clubs are interested in O’Riley as the 23-year-old is having a great season at Celtic. Ahead of Saturday’s Scottish Cup final, the Denmark international has made 48 appearances for the Hoops in the 2024/25 campaign, scoring 19 goals and assisting a further 18.

The clash with Rangers at Hampden Park may be the Celtic midfielder’s last as it remains to be seen who makes an official move for the player this summer.
