A man in his 40s has tragically died following a crash on the M58.

The smash happened on the M58 westbound between the M6 ​​Orrell Interchange near Wigan and junction three for St Helens. around 12.53 yesterday (Friday, May 17). A section of the highway was completely closed while emergency services responded.

Lancashire Police said the crash involved four vehicles – two large articulated lorries and two cars. Unfortunately, the driver of one of the cars died on the spot.

He has yet to be formally identified but is believed to be a man in his 40s, the force added. A section of the highway was closed in the afternoon and evening after the crash while investigations took place.

The westbound carriageway was fully reopened at around 5am this morning after resurfacing work took place. Officers are now appealing for witnesses or anyone with footage to come forward.

Sergeant Matt Davidson, Senior Investigating Officer at Lancashire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “First and foremost, my thoughts are with the driver’s family and loved ones at this difficult time. This was a difficult and challenging scene for the emergency services that attended. .

“Cosala was closed for a substantial period while we investigated the collision and repairs were made to the road.
