New Liverpool manager Arne Slot is known for his no-nonsense approach, often encouraging his players to be tough on each other during training.

The Dutchman has earned a reputation for promoting attractive football throughout his eight-year coaching career, which has seen him progress from SC Cambuur in the lower leagues at Anfield via AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord.

Like his predecessor Jurgen Klopp, Slot learned from his unremarkable playing days that sometimes a tougher approach is called for.

If he feels the standards of his players are slipping during training, he is not afraid to instruct one of them to give the others a wake-up call.

During his tenure at Feyenoord, he even managed to ruffle the feathers of both Jose Mourinho and Diego Simeone by questioning their tactics.

Bram van Polen, a tough player at PEC Zwolle, recalls how Slot encouraged him to make tackles during training when Slot was an assistant coach at the club after his last four seasons there as a player.

Van Polen shared, “Slot puts a lot of energy into all his training sessions. He is very demanding and wants things practiced to perfection.

“But honey, if he thought at the end of the week that the players didn’t give it their all in training… If the squad lacked clarity, he’d come to me the day before the game and say, ‘You can lead. everyone over the edge in our last training session?

“And you know what? I loved that. Oh yeah, I was turned on. He wanted me to put the boot in it—and I’d give it my all.”

But Van Pollen believes his former coach has all the tools to succeed.

He said: “I would hammer them in training full time – and it was fantastic how Slot got everyone in the right, aggressive attitude for the game the next day.

“I knew then that he was going to be a really fabulous coach.”

Slot flew to Merseyside on Friday to finalize his contract and meet new chief executive Michael Edwards and sporting director Julian Edwards.

Liverpool are paying Feyenoord £11m in damages – and were also forced to pay the Dutchman’s final month’s wages from his Rotterdam contact of around £320,000.

The famous slot enjoyed finishing Mourinho on more than one occasion when their teams met five times in Europe over three years.

He told the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss that he prefers to watch Pep Guardiola’s teams. He said: “If I watch Pep’s teams, I know I might learn a thing or two. There are always great details in his attacking and attractive style.”

Mourinho responded by suggesting that studying his team could help Slot win a trophy.

Another European match against Simeone’s Atletico ended with the Argentine facing the Slot at the final whistle after another exchange of words.

Simeone rolled over again when he saw the Dutchman laughing at him in the tunnel.

“Slot had the courage to tell me that I’m a frustrated character and that he’s messing me up with all kinds of things,” Simeone revealed. “I would never say that about a fellow manager.”

But Van Pollen is confident his old mentor has what it takes to triumph.

He added: “Slot has many good qualities as a coach. I knew even when he was still a player that he would be good.

“He knew how to get the best out of players and that proved so true once he had the chance to build his own team.”
