Drivers could be slapped with a hefty fine for the daily habit

Motorists have been warned by police that they could face a huge fine for vaping while driving. Breaching the Road Traffic Act could result in a fine of up to £5,000.

Experts pointed out that fumes inside a vehicle can “significantly impair the visibility” of the driver, which can lead to serious legal repercussions. Although vaping and driving is not explicitly illegal and there are no specific motoring laws to prohibit it, drivers could be hit with a hefty fine if they are found to be distracted by fumes.

A clear, unobstructed view of the road is essential for safe driving. However, many drivers may not be aware that their vaping habits could be affecting their visibility and inadvertently breaking the law, which could result in a substantial fine.

The temporary visual impairment caused by fogging can obscure crucial details on the road, leading to dangerous situations, accidents or even death. Surrey and Sussex Policing Unit said recreational vaping while driving can have “horrendous” consequences.

They added: “All it takes is a moment to be distracted and it can cause an accident or, even worse, a death. There are no laws against vaping. Anyone who is distracted in any way could be guilty of a crime, be it smoking, vaping, eating, etc.

“In the investigations we conduct, any distractions should be treated on a case-by-case basis.”

Under the Road Traffic Act, it is an offense to drive a mechanically propelled vehicle on a road or other public place without “due care and consideration” or reasonable consideration for other people using the road or place.
