A Nuneaton school is to be crowned the best in the UK in The Education Awards 2024

A Nuneaton school is set to be crowned the best in the UK in The Education Awards 2024. Etone College has plenty of reason to celebrate.

Not only has the secondary school been nominated for the 2024 Education Awards, but its headteacher Ian Smith is also in line for an award. The school has been shortlisted for Secondary School of the Year.

Mr. Smith is in the running for Director of the Year. Since 2015, he has led the school to achieve and maintain a ‘good’ Ofsted rating, ensure positive progress in pupil attainment and double the number of pupils attending Etone each year.

In addition, the Leicester Road school also received a community award at the Education Business Awards 2024.

It is the second year running that the school, which is part of the Matrix Academy Trust, has received nominations for best secondary school and headteacher.

The nominations come as the school undergoes a huge transformation – a £6.6m extension. It is being built to replace the old teaching block and is due to open in September.

For both the school and Mr Smith himself, it is recognition of the efforts of all staff in enabling Etone College to be where it is today. “I am so proud that Etone has been shortlisted for this honour,” he said.

“Any award is appreciated, but to be shortlisted for School of the Year is really something special.” Both he and the school don’t have long to wait to find out if they are winners as the awards ceremony takes place on July 4 at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham.
