Trump promises to commute the prison sentence of Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht

Former President Trump promised on Saturday to commute the prison sentence of Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the online drug-selling site Silk Road.

The GOP trailblazer made the pledge while addressing the Libertarian National Convention in Washington, DC, in an attempt to win over skeptical party activists, many of whom held signs that read: “FREE ROSS.”

“If you vote for me, on the first day I’m going to commute Ross Ulbricht’s sentence to time served,” Trump said, earning the night’s loudest cheers. “He’s already turned 11. We’re going to take him home.”

During his presidency, Trump considered intervening to free Ulbricht, but ultimately decided against a pardon.

Ulbricht, now 40, was sentenced in 2015 to life in prison by a judge who cited six deaths caused by drugs bought from his website and five people he tried to kill.

Ulbricht operated the site between 2011 and 2013, when he was arrested.

Trump also promised to protect cryptocurrencies by stopping President Biden’s “crusade to crush cryptocurrencies.”

“We’re going to stop it. I’m going to make sure that the future of crypto and the future of Bitcoin is made in the US, not driven overseas,” Trump said. “I will support the right to self-custody. To the nation’s 50 million cryptocurrency holders, I say this: with your vote, I will keep (Sen.) Elizabeth Warren and her scumbags out of your bitcoin. And I will never allow the creation. of a central bank digital currency”.

Trump’s appearance was part of an ongoing effort to reach potential supporters in places that are not heavily Republican.
