The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued a g warning for UK holidaymakers and tourists going to France,. The alert comes before the middle of the week when many families head abroad.

The warning coincides with anniversary commemorations in France, which could cause significant disruption, reports BirminghamLive. The update says: “Between June 5 and 7, commemorative events for the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings will take place in Normandy. Commemorative events are ticketed and it is not possible to attend if you do not have a ticket in advance. .

“On June 6, from 6am to 8pm, there will be a restricted traffic area north and west of Caen from the RN13 road area to the sea. You must display a windshield sticker in this area.

“Check Calvados Prefecture D-Day page 80 (in French) for more information, including a map of restricted areas. Some roads may be closed, please allow extra travel time.”

Tourists should be aware of potential disruptions to these dates and allow extra time for travel in the region. The FCDO also maintains an ongoing terrorism alert in France, stating that “terrorists are very likely to attempt to carry out attacks” in the country.

Busy tourist spots are most likely to be targeted, and tourists should follow the advice of emergency authorities. The government body issued a stark warning: “Terrorist attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by foreigners, such as shopping malls, entertainment establishments, cultural events, public transport and places of worship.”

“Methods of attack included knife attacks, shootings, bombings and vehicle attacks. Be vigilant in public places and follow the advice of French local authorities.”
