Leeds United’s summer deal to sign Joel Piroe from Swansea City has come with additional clauses that will come into play if the club are promoted through the play-offs this month.

Leeds’ season boils down to this final set of playoff games, with three games in the way of the Whites and the Premier League.

If they get there, it would be a huge success for the 49ers after they oversaw a turbulent summer following relegation and Andrea Radrizzani selling his stake in the club.

Leeds owe Joel Piroe sales to Swansea if promoted – Report

Leeds’ biggest summer signing was that of Joel Piroe from Swansea City, joining for an eight-figure fee that was variously reported by various outlets as between £10.5m and 12 million pounds.

WalesOnline now reports that, while the exact set-up of the deal between Leeds and Swansea is not entirely transparent, they will owe the Swans extras if they are promoted:

“The exact makeup of Piroe’s West Yorkshire deal, believed to be worth an initial £12m, is still unclear, but one of the add-ons is understood to be dependent on promotion to the Premier League.

“Indeed, sources close to the deal have previously indicated that the return of top-flight football to Elland Road could be worth up to £3m for the Swans.”

Who will win the playoffs?

Joel Piroe’s stats this season

Early season form for the Dutchman has promised big things in a Leeds shirt, adding an air of confidence in front of goal that has been missing for some time.

However, as the season wore on, Piroe’s influence in the side deteriorated, making it clearer that he was not a good fit for the system as it stands.

He produced yet another solid return in front of goal, adapting to a new system that isn’t just based on his results:

Joel Piroe’s statistics for the league 23/24
Appearances (minutes) 45 (2791)
Goals 13
Assistance 3
xG at 90 0.41
Shots at 90 2.74
Touches in the opposition box at 90 3.32
Pass success 80.9%

Piroe has been a big spender at Leeds despite solid goal return

It is clear to see this season that Leeds have been at their best when Piroe has not been in the starting line-up.

It’s useful to have the Dutchman in the squad because his finishing in the box is better than almost everyone we have, as shown by his well-taken effort against Southampton.

However, given our pressing structure and willingness to play in transition, Piroe doesn’t seem like a good fit for us as both are his weaknesses.
