Pre-dawn shooting in Birmingham leaves one woman dead and another injured

One woman was killed and another injured in a shooting in Birmingham on Sunday.

West Precinct officers were dispatched at 4:30 a.m. to a report of a person shot at 10th Street West and Graymont Avenue.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said police arrived at the scene and located a vehicle off the road. Inside they found two injured women.

Both women were taken to area hospitals.

The homicide victim was pronounced dead at UAB Hospital. The second woman suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Fitzgerald said details are limited in the investigation.

The woman is Birmingham’s 54th homicide since 2024. Of those, five have been ruled justifiable and are therefore not considered criminal.

There were 51 homicides on May 26, 2023, in Birmingham.

Across Jefferson County, there were 77 homicides, including 54 in Birmingham. At this time last year, there were 68 murders across the county.
