Sheffield Wednesday have ‘initiated contact’ in a bid to sign a ‘fantastic’ striker.

Sheffield Wednesday have ‘initiated contact’ with a club in a bid to sign their ‘fantastic’ striker.

Sheffield Wednesday are still a few weeks away from the transfer window opening, but they are already waiting to get down to business.

The Owls’ first challenge of the summer was to tie down Danny Rohl to a new contract, and they managed to do so within a month of the season ending.

The club can now look forward to strengthening their squad, with Rohl set to receive funds to bring in his own players.

The German had his first crack at the transfer window in January and enjoyed great success, with Ike Ugbo, James Beadle and Ian Poveda all making vital contributions to their survival.

The club are still keen to re-sign all three this summer and have reportedly already made the move to sign Ike Ugbo.

Sheffield Wednesday are making a move to sign Ike Ugbo

According to The Star journalist Alex Miller, Wednesday has already “initiated contact” about a deal for the striker.

Miller wrote on X: “You understand that Sheffield Wednesday are one of a number of clubs who have initiated contact regarding the potential transfer of Ike Ugbo.

“However, it is unlikely that any deal will happen before the Copa America, where Ugbo will play for Canada.”

Ugbo has scored seven goals in 18 games for Wednesday this year after joining from Troyes in January.

The ‘fantastic’ striker has two years left on his contract in France and Troyes will certainly be looking to cash him in rather than send him back out on loan.

Can the Owls afford to sign him permanently?

Ugbo’s current market value is around £2.4m but if there are already a number of clubs interested then the price could rise.

The Owls will certainly take advantage of an advantage in the race for his signature given his success at Hillsborough over the past five months.

However, while Dejphon Chansiri has promised to inject some funds into the club, spending millions on a player may not be in his plans.

Recent reports have already claimed he will look to spend his money on big wages rather than transfer fees – a claim that could cause problems in Wednesday’s pursuit of Ugbo.
