Sam Burgess on the Warrington Wolves star’s future as a club circle

Warrington Wolves underlined their title credentials last night with a famous win over Catalans Dragons in Perpignan. The Wire showed both their defensive resilience and killer instinct as they absorbed a huge amount of pressure from the Catalans before striking the decisive blow.

The result continues an impressive season for Wolves who are facing silverware on all fronts. However, one of the key parts of their winning machine has been linked with a move away from the club in recent days.

20-year-old Matty Nicholson has been a crucial player for Wolves this season. He has been an ever-present since recovering from an early-season injury, making eight appearances and scoring two tries.

Reports suggest that five NRL clubs are currently vying for his signature. Now Warrington head coach Sam Burgess has addressed rumors that Nicholson will leave the club.

Speaking in the Warrington Guardian, Burgess addressed claims that Nicholson could be on the verge of a move to the NRL. Burgess is adamant he believes Nicholson still has a future at the club. However, he admits he has ambitions to play at the highest level.

“He will make the right decision at the right time, but for now he likes his job.

“He has ambition and I respect that. If it goes like that, we’ll send him in the best shape possible and with the most experience possible, but he’s a great player.” Burgess explained.

Burgess believes Nicholson will continue to improve with each passing game in his senior career. If he does leave, Burgess believes the Warrington side are ready to step up to fill the void.

“If he leaves, the NRL would get a great player and for us, that would be the next man up.”

Matty Nicholson starred as Warrington ended Catalans Dragons’ unbeaten home run this season. Thanks to their win, Wolves went top of the Super League. They are currently level on points with St Helens with nine wins from their opening 12 games.

Wigan Warriors play Salford Red Devils later today, needing a win to close the gap on the top two, although the Warriors now have two games in hand on their nearest rivals.

Warrington and Wigan go head-to-head in two season-defining meetings in the coming weeks. First up, Wigan travel to the Halliwell Jones Stadium for a top-of-the-table clash on June 1, before the two sides meet in the Challenge Cup final at Wembley the following weekend.

Having played such a big part in Wolves’ success so far this season, Nicholson is likely to play in both games. If he is lining up a move to the NRL, he will be keen to take as many winners’ medals on the fly as possible.
