Leicester’s busy road will close for five weeks ahead of ‘essential’ gas works

A busy road in Leicester is to close for five weeks due to ‘essential’ gas works. Loughborough Road in Belgrave will be closed southbound from the roundabout at the A563 and Watermead Way to Melton Road from Monday 3 June.

Cadent Gas said the work, planned to last “around five weeks”, would upgrade 1km of “outdated” gas pipes under the road, which are “decades old”. The work was said to be “essential” to keeping homes in the area warm.

It added that the work would “future proof” the network and “pipelines ready for the introduction of greener gas”. The road will remain open in the northbound direction, he added.

Richard Sansom, network director for Cadent in the East Midlands, said: “This work is part of a major £1.1 billion investment in our eastern network by Cadent, which is vital to ensure that we keep gas flowing to homes in Leicester and beyond for generations. to come With the gas mains being decades old, it is essential to replace them to future-proof our network and minimize the amount of repair work we need to do in the area in the coming years.

“Keeping the people of Leicester warm in their homes is our number one priority. We understand the frustrations this will cause road users and residents and apologize for this.

“I would urge everyone to allow a little extra time on their journeys throughout the works and would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding as our engineers complete these works safely and as quickly as possible.” Cadent said detour signs will be installed to help reduce congestion in the area.

It was said that the gas would remain on during the works.
