Super League attendance: Outstanding figure but two games fail to reach 5,000

After the short break due to the Challenge Cup, it was the return of Super League and Round 12 provided six exciting matches that saw equally exciting Super League attendance figures.

Much has been made of the attendances at the Challenge Cup semi-finals, with the two matches averaging just over 10,000 fans each, a worrying figure for games where teams bid for a place at Wembley.

There were a number of factors, from cup tickets not being included in season tickets and also the use of neutral venues, however early ticket sales suggested the final at Wembley would be well attended.

Warrington Wolves have already sold 10,000 on their own alone, not through the RFL or other sellers such as Wembley as a venue. It’s been five years since Wire were in the big game and they seem to be making the most of it.

However, the Super League attendance numbers and a large number of Warrington fans traveled to the south of France to witness the end of the Catalan side’s 12-win streak. Sam Burgess’ side won 16-8.

There was a similar scoreline on Friday night as Warrington’s weekend opponents Huddersfield were beaten 16-10 by Leigh and the Leopards began to find their form this campaign.

The other two games on the night saw Castleford heap more misery on Hull FC with a 30-22 win at The Jungle, while St Helens put the pressure on Rohan Smith as they hit Leeds Rhinos with 40-10.

That moved St Helens into top spot but Wigan Warriors responded today to join their rivals and Warrington on 18 points. Matt Peet’s side won 26-6 against Salford Red Devils away from home. Hull KR were also on the road and put in a huge first half performance to help them win 64-14, making quick progress from last week’s defeat at Wigan.

An entertaining round of fixtures, but with the weekend’s games pitted against the FA Cup final and the Championship play-off finals at Wembley, how are the Super League attendances?

While not all three games reached the 10,500 average recorded by last week’s Challenge Cup fixtures, the three biggest Super League attendances came close.

Those figures of 11,367 at The Totally Wicked Stadium 9,410 at Stade Gilbert Brutus and 8,269 at The Jungle were three very solid performances, especially for Castleford.

This figure shows that Castleford’s ongoing aim of averaging 7,500 or more to reach the IMG points maximum is well received by fans who are voting with their feet and turning up in good numbers and in good voice.

Fortunately for them on Friday night, they were also rewarded. So did the St Helens fans, with the 11,000-plus crowd the biggest attendance of the round.

There were much lower attendances for both Huddersfield and Salford, with less than 8,500 fans attending their home games. Salford’s 4,087 was the lowest Super League attendance of the round, however London Broncos are yet to announce their crowd for the heavy loss against Hull KR.
