Images show the devastating aftermath of the Torpoint fire

A fire that tore through a bedroom at a property in Cornwall has left the room unrecognisable. Firefighters issued a warning saying that if the door had not been closed things could have been different.

Torpoint Community Fire Station attended the scene on Military Road in Torpoint at around 1.30am on Saturday (May 25). He said the homeowner had called 999 to report a fire in the property but would not confirm if they had been evacuated.

Crews were dispatched to the scene, with the call being treated as if people were inside because of this. Fortunately, they were evacuated and there were no casualties, but fire crews said “things could have been different”.

In a statement shared on Facebook, Torpoint Community Fire Station said: “A crew of six and a crew of two were called to a house fire just off Military Road. Two BA teams have been sent to battle for a salvageable property. The conditions were managed and the fire was quickly extinguished.

“The fire compartment door was found to be closed which significantly reduced the risk of the fire spreading, otherwise the scene could have been much worse. Crews from Saltash and Liskeard were also present and were essential for supply. water in an area where hydrants were 21 lengths apart!”
