GEORGE Williams has been handed a ban which will keep him out of Saturday’s Super League clash with Wigan Warriors.

However, he will be free to lead Warrington Wolves’ charge in next week’s Challenge Cup final against his former club.

The England captain, who scored one try and assisted the other to inspire a 16-8 win over Catalans Dragons on Saturday, was charged with Grade B dangerous contact following an incident in the second half of the same game.

The charge is for delayed contact on the passer, with the minutes stating that Williams “makes contact with an opponent after the ball has been released by an opponent in a vulnerable position, which causes flexion of the head, neck or spine on an offensive player . , which poses an unacceptable risk of injury to that player.”

As such, he has been handed a one-match ban, meaning he will not be available to face the defending Super League champions at the Halliwell Jones Stadium in Round 13.

There’s better disciplinary news for The Wire, with second-rounder Lachlan Fitzgibbon avoiding further punishment after fouling out in the first half in Perpignan.

The Australian was shown a yellow card by referee Chris Kendall for a high tackle on Dragons full-back Arthur Mourgue, but the jury did not find the incident worthy of a charge.

Catalans winger Tom Davies also avoided further punishment for his professional foul on Josh Thewlis which saw him spend 10 minutes in the bin.
