Suspected city car cannibal ‘linked to 14 vehicle break-ins’ nabbed after shop raid

A suspected car cannibal “connected to 14 vehicle dismembering offences” has been arrested after police raided a cutting shop in the city. Officers used a chainsaw to enter an address during warrants in Birmingham this morning, Wednesday 8 May.

A suspected shop – where stolen cars are stripped for parts – at a business premises in Bordesley Green was targeted by police, along with a home. A 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to steal from a motor vehicle.

West Midlands Police said they believed the suspect could be involved in 14 car break-ins between March last year and April. Det Supt Jim Munro, from Birmingham Police, said: “We have arrested a man who we believe is connected to a series of car cannibalism offenses in Birmingham city centre.

“We carried out a warrant at an establishment in Bordesley Green and searched a nearby residential building. Today we will focus on interviewing that person and endeavor to put evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service.

“This is part of our response to tackling car cannibalism in the West Midlands and to show the community that we are listening to the issues they raise with us. Here in Birmingham my investigation teams are working very hard – and this is one of our priorities – to make sure we reduce this type of crime and bring people before the courts.”
