Driver frees himself from submerged SUV in northeast Nebraska

WAKEFIELD, Neb. (KOLN) – A driver is safe after apparently freeing himself from an SUV submerged in a body of water near Wakefield, Neb., over the weekend.

Wakefield Volunteer Fire and Rescue was alerted to a submerged vehicle south of the city at 4am on Sunday.

The fire department was on scene along with the Dixon County Sheriff’s Office, Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Wayne County Emergency Management, Yankton County Search and Rescue and towing around the clock.

According to firefighters, the driver of the SUV was able to free himself from the submerged vehicle. The SUV was later towed from the water.

Highway 35 was temporarily closed for the search and cleanup. The applicants remained at the scene until around 9am
