Mason Greenwood says goodbye to Getafe fans, Manchester United still undecided on future

Mason Greenwood appeared to bid farewell to Getafe supporters after the end of the season, with Manchester United yet to make a final decision on his future.

Greenwood joined Spanish side Getafe on a season-long loan last summer. The striker was due to return to United after his contract expires on July 1.

Getafe are interested in Greenwood’s return, but he appeared to say goodbye in a statement shared on Instagram after Sunday’s 2-1 defeat against Mallorca, the final game of the season.

He said: “Incredibly grateful to the Getafe family and fans for an amazing season, thank you for making me feel welcome and one of your own. I enjoyed every second with my teammates and the club.

“A bittersweet ending, but it was a pleasure to play for you, I wish you all the best.”

All options remain open regarding Greenwood’s future. United’s preference is to secure a permanent sale, but they are willing to loan him out again if they can’t find a buyer. The club plans to discuss potential options with his family in the coming weeks.

If United cannot seal a move for Greenwood by June 30, a return to training cannot be ruled out. Although it is not known whether he will rejoin the first team, the club cannot, contractually, prevent his return.

Greenwood was made available for transfer after United confirmed on August 21 that they had abandoned their plan to bring the striker back into the first-team squad.

The Athletic reported earlier this month that Napoli had contacted United about a possible deal for Greenwood. Scored 10 goals and assisted six times in 36 appearances in all competitions for Getafe in 2023-24.

His current contract with United expires in June 2025 and includes a one-year extension option that can be activated should the club decide to do so.

It has been decided that Greenwood will resume his career away from Old Trafford after the UK Crown Prosecution Service dropped the case against him for attempted rape, assault and coercive control after key witnesses withdrew their co-operation. Greenwood has denied all the allegations against him.

In February, United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe said the club would have to make a new decision on Greenwood’s future.

He said: “The process will be to understand the facts, not the hype, and then try to come to the right decision based on values - is he a good guy or not – and answer whether he could honestly play for Manchester United well and would we be comfortable with her and would the fans be comfortable with her?”

Greenwood came through United’s academy and made his senior debut under former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2019.

He became United’s youngest player to represent the club in the Champions League, making his competitive debut in a 3–1 win over Paris Saint-Germain aged 17.

Since then, he has scored 35 goals in 129 appearances in all competitions for United.
