Martin Lewis advises on budget-friendly weddings: Prioritize a happy marriage over an extravagant ceremony | Liverpool Echo

With wedding season in full swing, money-saving expert Martin Lewis has shared some invaluable advice for couples planning to tie the knot. The financial wizard, 52 and happily married to Lara Lewington, discussed the true cost of weddings during a Q&A on the MSE app.

A bride-to-be named Emma asked Martin for advice on getting married on a budget: “Getting married is so important to me, how can I do it on a small income?”

Martin Lewis replied reassuringly: “Look, you don’t have to. If marriage is what matters to you. If you love your partner and want to make that legal, public, legal commitment to marry – then get married.”

He then added: “You don’t have to have a huge, big ceremony. I know many people you’ll find in our budget wedding guide, stories of people who just wore a beautiful dress or borrowed a dress from a friend or got something from a charity shop – and then he went to the park to celebrate with some picnic blankets and asked all his friends to bring their own food and drink.”

Stressing that a grand wedding is not a must, Martin continued: “There’s social pressure that you have to have the big white wedding with hundreds of guests – you don’t! If you can and you want to and you can afford it, great, but I always think it’s more important to have a happy, stress-free marriage than a huge, amazing wedding,” reports the Manchester Evening News.

Recognizing the bigger picture, the financial guru shared another piece of wisdom with the bride as she explained, “So if your wedding is going to lead to debt, discomfort or depression, because it will affect your life and finances in a way that You two can’t be happy together, forget it on a budget, if that’s what you want to do, loving each other has to have all the bells and whistles.”
