DWP boss caught lying ‘twice’ on national TV about PIP crackdown

The head of the Department for Work and Pensions, Mel Stride, has been caught lying TWICE on national television. DWP boss Mr Stride, who appeared during media rounds on Tuesday 7 May, was caught lying in Sky and ITV interviews.

The Canary reports on the BBC, Mr Stride claimed those accessing the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) disability benefit are receiving “thousands of pounds a month”. And he also told the BBC on Tuesday that PIP was “a benefit that has not been reviewed for over a decade” as the DWP launches a crackdown on disability benefits claimants with the launch of a new “green card”.

Speaking, the DWP said Mr Stride “misspoke” and meant “thousands of pounds a year”, which he said during other interviews that morning. One Twitter/X user ran: “ #PIP Mel Stride says pip costs thousands of pounds a month in TV interviews today.

“High rate care and high rate mobility add up to £737.20 a month. People with disabilities have additional costs because of their disability.” Another wrote: “Definitely lying there. My mother has severe anxiety after being attacked. Here is a photo of her PIP award. They awarded him £23.60 a week. It has risen to £28.70 with inflation. Certainly not thousands a week. month.”

“Monthly PIP allowance IN WORK or no unemployment- £314.82 The amount Mel Stride claims every month in rent and ENERGY BILLS- £1,800 The amount Mel Stride claimed even for a new Macbook for f#cksake- £1,657 . Care to comment who the real scrochini is Mr. Stride?” another fumed.

Another said: “Tory MP Mel Stride claims PIP benefit is thousands of pounds a month. No, it’s an absolute maximum of £720 a month, and most people only get around £250. Meanwhile he’s claiming £1,250 a week in rent expenses Lie you ****.”

And another typed: ‘Apparently Tory MP Mel Stride is on TV misleading the public by telling them that people with anxiety and depression get ‘thousands of pounds a month PIP’. They do not. The vast majority receive just £28.70 a week.
