Free and cheap fun in Leicester this term

It’s half term in Leicester this week and parents in the city will be looking for fun ways to entertain their children. Leicester City Council has produced a handy guide to keep families informed of what’s happening in the city.

Events are held at the city’s tourist attractions, museums, libraries and other places. The fun starts tomorrow (Tuesday) when Newarke House Museum invites visitors to bring a picnic to enjoy in its beautiful garden.




There will be games, butterfly-themed crafts and a children’s garden trail, with a £4 charge for activities if booked in advance or £5 on the door.

Also on Tuesday (May 28), Abbey Pumping Station will open its doors for one of its popular Rail Days. Hop aboard the narrow-gauge train, grab refreshments from the cafe, or simply pack a picnic and enjoy the museum grounds. Railway Day takes place between 11:30 and 16:00, with a fee of 50 lei for train travel.

Belgrave Hall will host an art party from 11am to 3pm on Wednesday (May 29) when youngsters can take a plain t-shirt or glass jar and use a range of decorative materials to make them unique for £5 – cash only. – while the whole family can enjoy the hall’s gardens.

Also on Wednesday, families are invited to walk, walk or cycle to the Oval in Abbey Park to join in the celebrations marking the end of National Walking Month. Funky Feet and Wacky Wheels races will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Lots happening on Thursday (30 May) with a day of learning, crafts and eco-friendly fun at Leicester Museum in New Walk, Clay-Time at the Guildhall, crafts at Leicester Cathedral from 10am to noon and Commotion in the Ocean – a free seaside themed event at the Haymarket Shopping Centre.
