Major rescue operation after Newquay cliffs incident

Emergency crews in Cornwall spent almost three hours retrieving a person who became stranded on a cliff in Cornwall. Several teams worked to rescue a person who was trapped on the rocks near Whipsiderry last night (Monday 27 May).

The Coastguard Search and Rescue team in Newquay led the rescue after being alerted by a person who became trapped on the precarious cliff last night. At 10.06pm police, fire and ambulance crews were at the scene along with Newquay RNLI and Padstow coastguard.




The trapped person was rescued from the cliff with a rope before being handed over to the ambulance service to be checked over.

In a statement, Newquay Coastguard said: “Last night at 10.06pm Newquay Coastguard Rescue Team, Newquay RNLI Lifeboats, HM Coastguard Padstow, Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service and South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust were tasked to assist police in Devon and Cornwall with an incident on the cliffs near Whipsidery, the incident was attended by a full-time senior coastguard office.

“The casualty was eventually recovered safely by rope rescue and handed over to the ambulance service. Thanks to all the assets involved for all your help and assistance.

“The Newquay team returned to base and ready for re-engagement by approximately 00:45. If you see someone in distress along the coast, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard. Stay safe.”
