Nuneaton’s D-Day 80 celebrations will include the renaming of the road for Fusilier Louis Carter

The 80th anniversary of Normandy Day will be extra special in Nuneaton. On Saturday, May 8, the city will not only mark the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings on June 6, 1944, but will also see a road renamed in honor of one of its own heroes.

Clinic Drive will be renamed Fusilier Louis Carter Drive. Fusilier Carter, who was just 18 when he lost his life in the heat of Helmand province in 2009, already has a playground in Riversley Park named in his honour, and now the nearby road will also bear his name.

There will be a special ceremony to mark the moment, something Louis’ mother Denise has long campaigned for. It will start from the steps of the City Hall at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 8.

Murray Richards, a Freeman of Nuneaton and Bedworth and his proud parade marshal, said the whole community was invited to watch the unveiling. Town Clerk Paul Gough will make the proclamation on the steps of the Town Hall.

Then the parade will form near the cemetery gate of the Church of the Mother of God. Mrs Carter will lay a wreath on the grave of her son, who is buried at the church.

At 2:30 p.m., the parade leaves, and at 2:35 p.m., the parade will then stop on Clinic Drive. The service will then take place to rename the road.
