Sheffield Wednesday, Plymouth Argyle, Hull City and Norwich City move as silence falls on Cardiff City

It was a productive weekend for Championship rivals Cardiff City.

Sheffield Wednesday have moved decisively to tie down their in-demand manager Danny Rohl to a new contract. This came after the German worked wonders to keep the club in the division after they looked keen for the drop midway through the campaign.

Meanwhile, Plymouth Argyle went out and got their man. Wayne Rooney was the choice for the Pilgrims despite the Manchester United legend’s terrible spell in charge of Birmingham City, a spell that ultimately played a huge part in their undoing.

And others move to a rhythm. Norwich City appear to be on the verge of appointing their new manager. The Canaries were ruthless in their decision to let David Wagner go after their Championship play-off semi-final defeat to Leeds United. They now hope to appoint FC Nordsjaelland boss Johannes Hoff Thorup as their new manager by the end of the week, according to BBC Radio Norfolk.

Hull City are expected to announce by the end of the week that former Hamburg boss Tim Walter will also be their new manager, according to our sister title Hull Live.

All relatively quick, all things considered. Norwich have only been without a manager for a week and a half. Plymouth had to line up their targets depending on the division they found themselves in, but Neil Dewsnip got a big name in Rooney, although he has a lot to prove of course.

Hull were firm in their call to wield the ax with Liam Rosenior guiding them to a seventh-place finish and being nominated for the manager of the season award. Acun Ilicai made a tough choice in cutting Rosenior, but focused almost immediately on Walter.

The Owls’ sly business of keeping Rohl on board is huge for them. It came after productive and lengthy talks between owner and manager in London in recent weeks “The hard work of preparing for next season is already underway,” Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri said when the news was announced at the weekend. “It was important to secure Danny’s services on a well-deserved new contract and I am delighted that it is now in place.”

In Cardiff, meanwhile, the sound of silence continues to be deafening, despite this situation also looming large on the agenda for months and months and months.

Understandably, some supporters are tired of the questions about Erol Bulut’s future that keep popping up in press conferences, but the truth is that many knew we were going to be in this situation months in advance and that such questions had to be asked at the end, lest the situation fly. under the radar. Without a manager, everything crashes.

Unfortunately, Cardiff once again find themselves in a situation where fans, players and staff are left in the dark as this impasse continues. Subscribe to our Cardiff City newsletter here.

The longer all parties are at this impasse, the more uncomfortable it becomes. There has been turmoil among the Cardiff superiors for weeks now and that will only increase with chairman Mehmet Dalman the man in charge of it all. It must be said that it cannot be an easy thing, given the current situation.

Some have said the club is just waiting for final approval to be approved by Tan, other insiders deny it has even gotten that far. We could be hours, days or, heaven forbid, weeks away from knowing the outcome, but that’s the situation yet placed in such a delicate place, there is no guessing which way it will fall.

What is fair to say is that it would not have been allowed to last so long if there had been no hope of a settlement. Bulut supporters, of which there are many, will at least be comforted by this.

But it’s almost a month since Cardiff last kicked a ball. The players and staff have gone on holiday, the transfer window opens in two weeks and the players will be back for pre-season before you know it.

While a month seems like an age when there is no update or communication on board, everything is very recoverable and can be done so quickly if a result is reached in the coming days. We’re told Bulut and his staff are planning in hopes of a positive outcome, and once they’re given the go-ahead, they can pull the trigger on a number of things that urgently need to be addressed.

However, a problem may arise if a positive result is not reached. Cardiff will have to start their manager hunt, staff hiring and player recruitment plans from scratch and then, well, they’ll really be stuck in the rut. It would make everything that much weirder.

There is however much hope and faith that will not be the case. Bulut will have learned a lot from his first year of leadership in the Championship and will know what mistakes to avoid next season. If all sides align in their ambition to challenge the top six and a middle ground can be found for other demands in these difficult negotiations, more positivity can come from that.
