May: Early Career Enterprise Fellows 2024 | News and features

Ten ambitious academics have been named as the first cohort of the University of Bristol’s Early Career Enterprise Fellowships (ECEF).

The ECEF Award aims to support early career researchers to acquire the skills necessary to make progress in the commercialization of academic intellectual property by providing training, dedicated support and funding.

The new initiative was led by Associate Professor Pro Vice-Chancellor for Enterprise and Innovation, Michele Barbour, following the success of the University’s Enterprise Scholarships.

The first cohort of Early Career Enterprise Fellows includes academics working in diverse fields such as artificial intelligence, medical education, composites manufacturing and next-generation cameras.

The list of ECEF 2023/24 scholars includes:

– Kamirul Kamirul, School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering: Commercialization of an innovative AI system designed for the detection and identification of naval platforms in synthetic aperture radar images

– Dr Grace Pearson, Bristol Medical School: As part of her PhD research in geriatric medicine, Grace has developed a series of clinical cases for ‘case-based learning’ which she hopes to make commercially available to other schools of medicine.

– James Uzzell, School of Civil, Aerospace and Design Engineering: James has developed a concept for a new dynamic induction coil for manufacturing energy efficient composites and will develop a prototype to gain industry validation and produce a case of patenting.

– Lingteng Kong, School of Physics: Development of the state-of-the-art camera for long-range detection of alpha emitters, which can significantly increase the efficiency and safety of radiation monitoring.

– Rachel Hare, Department of English: Working with Dr Lucy Selman and Lesel Dawson to move towards establishing the Good Grief Festival as a community interest company.

– Jennifer Daniel, School of Education: Collaborate with Dr Lucy Kelly on The Diary Toolkit initiative.

– Nicholas Gray, School of Education: Development of a product called Tabletop Travels, a box containing sensory experiences that transport the recipient to exotic places. Intended for older adults who cannot travel alone.

– Elena Filllola Mayoral, School of Engineering, Mathematics and Technology: Using AI to accelerate the reporting and validation of greenhouse gas emissions and exploring how this technology can be operationally implemented on a global scale.

– James Griffith, School of Civil, Aerospace and Design Engineering: Development of a new high quality demonstration panel to be submitted for testing with a view to commercialization.

Professor Michele Barbour said: “I am delighted to announce the first cohort of Early Career Enterprise Scholarships at the University of Bristol.

“The university is a forward-thinking institution committed to supporting academics with ambitions to commercialize their research.

“We have some amazing researchers and brilliant projects in this first cohort, and I’m excited to see how their projects develop here.”

The Early Career Enterprise Fellows will be presented at the University of Bristol’s Enterprise Festival on the 20thth June and will celebrate and share the work of ECEFs with our university enterprise colleagues.
