The Sheffield Wednesday target is now set for talks over a permanent move to the Champions League club

Sheffield Wednesday have suffered a blow in their pursuit of a ‘superb’ youngster.

The summer transfer window isn’t set to open for another few weeks, but Sheffield Wednesday have already set their plans as they look to improve on last season.

The Owls are waiting for some of their key players to sign new contracts with the club, but are also keen to bring in new talent to help the team climb higher.

While Wednesday have long been keen to bring Ike Ugbo back to Yorkshire this summer, they have reportedly rekindled their interest in Mika Biereth.

Arsenal recalled the striker from his loan spell at Motherwell in January and was linked with a move to Hillsborough, but he eventually joined Austrian club Sturm Graz.

Biereth finished the season with 24 goals and has since attracted interest from Wednesday again.

Mika Biereth prepares to talk to Sturm Graz

Danny Rohl’s side have yet to make a move for Biereth, but they could already miss him.

According to the Evening Standard, Arsenal are set to hold talks with Sturm Graz this week as they look to sign him permanently.

The 21-year-old “Wonderful” has just one year left on his contract at the Gunners, will have to make a decision whether to let him leave permanently or send him back on loan.

They will be joined by a host of Championship clubs in competition with Sturm Graz for his signature on Wednesday, however, they will certainly hold an advantage after finishing top of the league.

Sturm Graz ended RB Salzburg’s ten-year reign as Bundesliga champions and now qualify for the Champions League.

Biereth would certainly be tempted by the promise of European football, but he may also not want to move away from England for good.

Mika Biereth or Ike Ugbo?

If Sheffield Wednesday can get a deal done for Mika Biereth, then he could be a real game changer, having claimed 83 goal contributions in 117 appearances in both senior and youth football.

However, he certainly couldn’t be blamed if he chooses to play in the Champions League and fight for Sturm Graz’s fifth league title.

Either way, Wednesday will certainly favor a move for Ike Ugbo, which looks far more likely to materialise.

The Owls have already “initiated contact” over a second deal for the striker and bringing Ugbo back to the club would be a huge step in the right direction.
