Championship side Leeds United will have to pay £3m if they are promoted this season

Leeds United will effectively be given a second chance at promotion in the play-offs.

The Whites missed out on automatic promotion at both Leicester City and Ipswich Town due to a very poor run of form after the international break in March.

Daniel Farke’s side picked up just eight points from their last eight games and although they went into the final day with a slim hope of finishing second, the miracle they needed failed to materialise.

After finishing third, Leeds will now face Farke’s former side Norwich City over two legs for the chance to play at Wembley against either Southampton or West Bromwich Albion.

On the back of their poor form to end the season, Leeds fans are not too confident heading into the play-offs. However, this is a brand new competition and therefore the regular season should be on the mind.

Leeds will owe the Championship side £3m if they win the play-offs

After losing a host of first-team players to relegation last summer, Leeds have made nine signings to rebuild their squad.

According to Transfermarkt, only Leicester City and Coventry City spent more than Leeds last summer, with the 49ers said to have paid around £30.9m in their first transfer window.

Joel Piroe, Ethan Ampadu, Glen Kamara and Ilia Gruev account for the vast majority of that spending, with the former’s transfer fees reaching eight figures.

According to Wales Online, Leeds initially spent £12m to sign Piroe from Swansea City, but that figure could rise further if Farke’s side win the play-offs.

They claim Leeds will owe the Swans a further £3m in add-ons on their return to the Premier League, taking the total transfer fee up to £15m.

Did Piroe justify his high transfer fee?

Based on what he offered and how he fits into the system, it has to be said that Piroe didn’t justify the big expense.

Although Piroe has scored some key goals against the likes of Preston North End, Watford, Middlesbrough and Bristol City just to name a few, a return of 13 is not the prodigious marksman that Leeds have done so much for.

The 24-year-old has had too many games where he has been on the fringes, be it a nine role or a little deeper in a 10 role. His performance in the recent defeat at QPR was shocking.

That being said, Piroe still has an opportunity to play a vital role in the next two, possibly three games. A winning goal in the play-off final would make him worth every penny.
