Crafted from a cotton blend, this street-friendly dress boasts a scoop neck and a sleeveless cut for a relaxed, comfortable fit. It rises to a sleek midi length with a side slit, offering a casual fit that’s forgiving and avoids snagging. It is currently available in all sizes from extra-small to extra-large.

Despite the potential concerns, the fabric isn’t see-through at all, although it’s wise to opt for neutral underwear rather than something bright or patterned.

Bethan Shufflebotham, senior fashion writer for The Mirror, managed to get her hands on the wardrobe essential last summer and writes that it pairs beautifully with trainers and a light blazer – but is just as stylish when worn on its own with Dr sandals Martin. In fact, she claims, this dress really is the ideal throw-on item for staying cool on hot days.

Last year, the dress garnered numerous five-star reviews, with customers praising the “great quality” and “great fit.” One happy customer remarked: “I love it, was worried it might be see through, but once it’s on, it’s not see through at all! It’s not sticky either, which makes it flattering. Looks good on its own or with a white denim jacket on cooler days. It also looks good with white sneakers or flat sandals.”

Another satisfied buyer commented: “I love this dress. Sticky, but not too sticky that it shows every bump. It further weakens the body. I’m 14 years old and I bought an L”.

And a third wrote: “You know it’s a good buy when you’ve worn it twice in a week! I got compliments both times too! I’m a size 10-12 and found the middle to fit nicely – not tight or too oversized. It also washes well.

However, one shopper was less than impressed, commenting: “The stripes made me look wider than I am and the neck a bit too high.”

Meanwhile, other top brands have clearly taken inspiration from the success of last year’s dress, with River Island releasing a similar Crochet Stripe Navy midi dress for 2024 – the main difference being the addition of a tie back, which provides a chic back open. detail, unlike M&S’s fully enclosed design.

New Look has also thrown its hat into the ring with the sleeveless green knit bodycon maxi dress, with a more wavy striped pattern and effortless style – albeit at a marginally higher price of £35.99, in comparison with M&S.

So whether you’re looking to recreate last year’s fashion moment or are just now getting into the trend, the £35 Rich Striped Cotton Knit Midi Dress is available here.
