Manchester United players have highlighted Roy Keane’s mistake on his list of players to sell

Diogo Dalot was named Manchester United’s Player of the Year last week, following in the footsteps of compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo.

Dalot has been an almost ever-present figure for United this season, featuring in 50 of his 52 matches in all competitions. He started all but three of his 38 Premier League games and scored three goals.

In a campaign that has seen United’s squad hit by an unprecedented injury crisis, Dalot has remained injury-free, missing just one matchday squad all season and that was through suspension. No outfield player has made more appearances than the Portuguese.

One of the most improved players since Erik ten Hag took over at Old Trafford two years ago, the Portugal international has established himself as one of United’s most important players. He has improved in almost every department of his game, proving reliable at both right-back and left-back.

This summer, United are looking to make changes to their squad landscape and the addition of a new right-back has not been ignored. The club are said to be chasing Bayer Leverkusen ace Jeremie Frimpong.

Dalot’s performances this season, however, mean United should not prioritize the position over others. Had Luke Shaw been available more often this term, Dalot would almost certainly have played more at right-back as opposed to switching flanks, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka providing competition.

Furthermore, the fact that United’s players voted Dalot as Player of the Year speaks volumes for how they recognized the standard of his performances this season. He rarely put a foot wrong throughout the campaign, establishing himself as one of Ten Hag’s most reliable operators.

Dalot’s performances this season could now force United legend Roy Keane to make a comeback. In December, Keane, along with Gary Neville, played a game of “Keep, last straw or ditch” on the Stick to Football podcast, where Neville analyzed the entire squad and asked Keane and other panelists to choose what to do with every. individual player.

Keane said United would have to “let go” of 10 players at the end of this season, and Dalot was among them. Neville agreed that Dalot needed unloading.

However, United’s players, as evidenced by Dalot being crowned Player of the Year, seem to think otherwise. The Portugal international, who will have ambitions to play at Euro 2024, is unlikely to be shown the door this summer, with Wan-Bissaka a more likely candidate to leave the full-back department.

Dalot is under contract at Old Trafford until June 2028 after putting pen to paper on a new deal 12 months ago.
