Marcel Sabitzer refuses to be drawn on Manchester United’s question after Borussia Dortmund’s win

Marcel Sabitzer refused to be drawn into comparing Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund after reaching the Champions League final with the latter on Tuesday.

Sabitzer secured a summer switch to Dortmund from Bayern Munich after a short loan spell at United last year. One of his 18 appearances for United came in last season’s Carabao Cup final against Newcastle under the Arch, after he was injured for the FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City a few months later.

He will return to the iconic stadium next month after helping his new club beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 in the two semi-finals. The Austrian played in all but one of his side’s games en route to Wembley.

Speaking to CBS Sports after full-time, Sabitzer was asked by United great Peter Schmeichel what the difference is at Dortmund compared to his time at Old Trafford and Bayern, and why his current side have been able to have so much success in the competition from this year.

He replied: “It’s special with this club. When I started the competition, I had a dream. It’s special when you see the faces of the fans, the boys around the club, the team – they’re all very happy. We are very happy to have this moment.”

Sabitzer has scored three times and provided an assist in his 18 appearances for United. In 38 games for Dortmund, he scored six goals and nine assists.

One of his goals and two of his assists came in an incredible 4-2 second-leg win over Atletico Madrid in a 5-4 aggregate victory in the quarter-finals. The 30-year-old played the full 90 minutes in both legs against PSG and reached his first Champions League final.

Dortmund also played in the competition at Wembley in their 2013 defeat to Bayern Munich, who play Real Madrid in the other leg of the semi-finals on Wednesday. The Bavarians sold Sabitzer for a fee of up to £17m after United decided they did not want to make his loan permanent.
