A council has launched an investigation after dozens of motorists managed to enter a park when an emergency gate was left open.

Cars were left on grass verges and paths inside Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham, on Monday while children played nearby.

Nearby resident Tauny Southwood described the situation as a “disaster waiting to happen” after seeing vehicles speeding through the park.

Birmingham City Council said it was looking into how the gates were left open.

“We would remind drivers that the emergency access gates are just that and should not be used to access the park even if they are open,” the council said in a statement.

He advised drivers to use nearby car parks instead, although Mr Southwood said they were full on the day.

He said this is not the first time that cars have been brought into the park, despite the fact that vehicle access is only allowed with prior permission.

“It is worrying that people are not prepared to respect the safety of others,” he said.

More car parking was needed, especially on days when it could be very busy, he added.

Another resident, who did not want to be named, said he could not believe the behavior of drivers parking in the park.

“It’s a beautiful park and a free resource, but with that comes the responsibility to take care of it,” he said.
