Wigan Warriors and Wigan Athletic confirm stadium name change

From next Monday, May 13, Wigan Warriors’ home ground will be known as ‘The Brick Community Stadium’, renamed in partnership with a local charity, as a 15-year association with DW Sports comes to an end.

The 25,138-capacity venue has been known as the “DW Stadium” since August 2009, when former Wigan Athletic owner Dave Whelan purchased a chain of sports fitness clubs from JJB Sports, another of his former businesses.

Before that, for the same reasons, it was known as the JJB Stadium for a decade from its opening in 1999 until its change to DW in 2009.

But with Whelan now not involved with either club and local businessman Mike Danson taking full control of Latics and Warriors last year, the DW slogan has been ditched in favor of a local charity.

‘The Brick’ is already front and center on the Cherry & Whites’ third shirt this season, a charity working to tackle poverty and homelessness in Wigan and Leigh Borough, as they have- for over 100 years.

According to the press release confirming the stadium’s name change, an agreement has been reached until the end of 2025, with the two clubs playing at the stadium expected to announce further support not only for The Brick but also for other local charities in the weeks next.

A new commercial partner is expected to put their name against the stadium at the end of 2025, and they are already working behind the scenes to find a successor.

Warriors CEO Kris Radlinski said: “The Brick charity has been a cornerstone of Wigan, transforming and influencing countless lives over many years.

“Naming Wigan’s stadium after their charity is a fitting tribute to their significant impact on the community.

“The renaming marks the beginning of our collaboration on meaningful projects designed to provide every opportunity for success to the people of our city.

“Wigan’s Brick Community Stadium really embodies that spirit – it’s a place where everyone in the town can come together to support their team.”

Meanwhile, CEO of The Brick, Keely Dalfen, added: “The renaming of the stadium is a fantastic gesture which cements our long-term partnership with Warriors and Latics, bringing together three of the city’s oldest serving institutions.

“We couldn’t be more excited to be officially associated with the city’s iconic stadium and two great clubs that align so closely with our values of opportunity, inclusion and equality.

“The positive influence the new stadium name will have on the people of Wigan will extend far beyond the stadium itself as we harness the power of sport to continue to put the community at the heart of everything we do.

“So many of us have experienced the intense sense of belonging when we support our teams on the ground, and it’s that sense of belonging that we work hard to create for the people we support.

“We are extremely grateful for the generosity of Mike Danson and the Executive Committee in granting this tremendous privilege to The Brick.”
