Ike Ugbo news offers possible clues in Sheffield Wednesday’s pursuit of Ian Poveda

Sheffield Wednesday may now have a clearer indication of a possible summer move for Ian Poveda.

Sheffield Wednesday are keen to re-sign Leeds United loanee Ian Poveda this summer, with his contract at Elland Road due to expire next month.

The Whites were beaten 1-0 by Southampton in the Championship play-off final on Sunday and are yet to announce their retained squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

But Poveda, 24, is expected to move on after four years at the club, with just 30 appearances and one assist in that time.

With Sheffield Wednesday, the Colombia international has picked up one assist in 10 league appearances but has wowed fans with his performances.

The Owls have won six of the eight games Poveda has started. His season has been cut short by injury and other clubs including Burnley, Luton Town and Sunderland are also interested.

Sheffield Wednesday are also keen to re-sign Ike Ugbo this summer, but reports say Danny Rohl has to wait until after the Copa America this summer with Ugbo in Canada’s squad.

Update Ike Ugbo gives Sheffield Wednesday clear directions to Ian Poveda

Ugbo has worked his way back into Canada’s squad following his impressive loan spell with Sheffield Wednesday, in which he scored seven goals in 18 league appearances after joining from Troyes in January.

However, Poveda was not selected for Colombia’s squad for the upcoming Copa America, which runs from June 20 to July 14.

The former Manchester City youngster has two caps for Colombia, both coming in 2023.

After a mixed season back in the Championship with Leeds United, Poveda misses out on international selection with the Copa America despite his impressive spell in S6.

Sheffield Wednesday are waiting for another thing

While Poveda’s absence from this summer’s Copa America allows Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday to turn to Poveda sooner than they can for Ugbo, the Owls are still waiting for another thing.

Leeds United have yet to announce their retained list. But according to the BBC: “All EFL clubs must submit their retained lists to the EFL by the third Saturday in May – which falls on the 18th of the month.”

So Leeds and Daniel Farke will have already made a decision on Poveda, although this has not yet been made public.

At the beginning of the year, it was claimed that Poveda It will leave Leeds United as a free agent this summer, so for Sheffield Wednesday, it could be a case of waiting for the London-born winger to official become a free agent.

Despite his injuries, Poveda’s return to the club would be a massive boost for Rohl, who was getting the most out of him, and the fans who really enjoyed Poveda in the second half of the season.
