The Sheffield Wednesday loanee has been officially released by his parent club ahead of the 2024/25 season

A player who spent the 2023/2024 season on loan with Sheffield Wednesday has now been released.

Sheffield Wednesday have certainly had a mixed bag with their loan signings in the 2023/24 season.

In total, the Owls signed nine players on loan; John Buckley, Momo Diaby, Ashley Fletcher, Jeff Hendrick and Devis Vasquez all joined last summer, while James Beadle, Kristian Pedersen, Ian Poveda and Ike Ugbo joined in the winter window.

Ultimately, it was January arrivals Beadle, Poveda and Ugbo who made the difference for Danny Rohl.

Sheffield Wednesday eventually finished 20th in the Championship table after winning their last three games of the season, in which Beadle and Ugbo shone.

Poveda missed the final weeks of the season through injury, although Rohl is keen to have Beadle, Poveda and Ugbo back at S6 this summer.

And now, one of the players on loan from the Owls for the season just ended has been officially released.

Jeff Hendrick released by Newcastle United

Hendrick, 32, is leaving Newcastle United after four seasons. In that time, the 79-capped Republic of Ireland international has made just 25 Premier League appearances for the Magpies.

Former Burnley and Derby County man Hendrick spent the final two-and-a-half seasons of his Newcastle deal on loan, spending time with QPR, Reading and then Sheffield Wednesday.

But Hendrick would only play 11 times for the Owls in the 2023/24 Championship campaign due to injuries and simply being out of the competition under Rohl.

Hendrick’s highlight of his time in S6 was scoring a late equalizer in a memorable 1-1 draw against Leicester City in November.

Sheffield Wednesday will return for Jeff Hendrick this summer

Hendrick arrived as a fairly steady loan signing for the Owls, albeit a disappointing one, and a seemingly desperate one on deadline day of the final summer transfer window.

And while he has shown the odd glimpse of his ability in the Premier League and internationally, he has generally been poor for Sheffield Wednesday.

Now, with Rohl clearing the pack and looking to bring in the Owls’ next generation of much younger players, a return for Hendrick this summer seems highly unlikely.

That’s also because Hendrick was probably on very high wages at Newcastle United; SalarySport claim Hendrick earned £50,000 a week at St James’ Park.

So Hendrick will undoubtedly have to take a pay cut with his next club, whoever that may be. But expect there to be plenty of Football League sides ready to pounce on the experienced midfielder.
