Sheffield Wednesday have ‘made contact’ in a bid to sign the former Celtic wonderkid

Sheffield Wednesday are keen to sign a former Celtic wonderkid on loan this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday are desperate to strengthen their attack over the next few months after ending the 2023-24 campaign with the second-lowest amount of goals in the Championship.

The Owls’ top scorer was Anthony Musaba with just eight, while nobody picked up more than five assists in all competitions.

While the club have already been linked with a new striker in the likes of Ike Ugbo and Mika Biereth, they are also looking to bring in a new winger to provide some threat and creativity.

Wednesday are still targeting a free transfer for Ian Poveda, but could look elsewhere to provide more depth.

According to journalist Joe Crann, Wednesday are considering a deal for Stade Brestois striker Karamoko Dembele.

He wrote on X: “Leaded to believe #SWFC have made contact with Karamoko Dembélé as they look to see if a loan move could be feasible for next season. I’ve had a remarkable year at Blackpool – there’s still no indication if Stade Brestois is open to another exit.”

Dembele was highly regarded as a child, making his debut for the U20s aged just 13.

Years later, at 16, he became Celtic’s youngest ever first-team player, and in October 2019, he was named one of six “outstanding young players poised to revolutionize the game” by L’Equipe.

Dembele’s career quickly declined after that and he managed just nine senior appearances in three years before being sold to Brest.

The 21-year-old made 18 appearances for the French club but failed to score or provide an assist before being sent out on loan to Blackpool.

Dembele reignited his career at Bloomfield Road, scoring eight goals and providing 13 assists in League One.

The youngster was then named Juniro Seasiders Player of the Season, Players’ Player of the Season and Supporters’ Player of the Season.

Would Brest send him back on loan?

Sheffield Wednesday are now keen to bring Dembele back to England, but it is unclear whether Brest are willing to send him out on loan again.

The opponent’s contract is set to expire in 2026 and Brest could look to offload him permanently to capitalize on his recent form.

There is likely to be a lot of competition for his signature, so the Owls would have to shell out a lot of cash if they were to turn down a loan deal.

The Ligue 1 club wouldn’t really benefit from sending him out on loan at this stage, so Wednesday could look to sign him on loan with an option to buy if they don’t want to pay seven figures this summer. .
