The Carabao Cup is set for a major rule change to keep Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Co

The Carabao Cup will use a seeding system next season which will see the ‘big’ teams avoid each other at the start of the competition.

With the expanded format of the Champions League coming into play next season, the Carabao Cup has had to make changes to avoid overcrowding.

A seeding system will be implemented which will see teams playing in Europe avoid each other in the early rounds, according to The Telegraph.

Rankings will be brought in which will ensure that the teams in the Champions League do not attract other teams in the competition, as well as any other teams in the Europa League.

The third round of the Carabao Cup will also take place over a two-week period to help match congestion as well.

European competitions will make drastic changes next season, which will qualify each team in a big league rather than groups.

Instead of playing six matches to qualify for the knockout rounds, this will expand to eight, adding extra matches to an already busy schedule.

And the Carabao Cup, which starts in August, was set to clash with the competition in September.

The Club World Cup, which will also feature more teams rather than the winners of each continental competition, will cause even more chaos next year.

Clubs have already warned the FA that they may have to play their reserves in the cup if action is not taken.

And Liverpool did just that in 2019 when they traveled to the Club World Cup when they faced Monterrey but also had Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup.

The club’s under-23 boss Neil Critchley took charge as Liverpool fielded their youngest-ever starting XI while the senior side played around the world.

The criteria for the new Carabao Cup ranking system have yet to be clarified, while Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has already voiced his concerns.

“Next season when we play in the Champions League, hopefully we’ll qualify, it’s the same week as the Carabao Cup,” he said.

“How are we going to play? Will we play EDS (development team) in the Carabao Cup?

“After next season, we go to the Club World Cup. We are incredibly happy, a lot of money, incredibly prestigious.

“But how many days do I give the players? It’s unsustainable.”
