The Great Kirkburton Sing is back after 55 years and everyone is welcome

The Great Kirkburton Sing returns to the village – after an absence of 55 years.

The last annual carol, a fondly remembered tradition dating back over two centuries, was held on June 2, 1969.

The community event – open to everyone with vocal chords! – will take place on the church field next to the new cemetery in the village on Sunday, June 2 (12-2:30 p.m.).

Community voices will be supported by HD8 Voices Choir, Hade Edge Band and local school children.

There will be a raffle, stalls and refreshments and all proceeds will go towards All Hallows Church for the creation of a community contemplation garden.

Local music teacher Sally Byrne wanted to revive the pre-Covid event, but the pandemic put an end to preparations.

Sally asked a friend Andrea Tindle, from the Kirkburton History Group, to take over the organization and bring the Sing back again.

Andrea said: “After receiving a grant from the Parish Council I was able to get the ball rolling.

“The program (picture above) was designed by church member Julian Atkinson, using information provided by myself and fellow members of the History Group.

“It is very attractive and informative and has been very well received by everyone who has bought a copy so far for just £1.

“We were lucky enough to secure the Hade Edge Band. They will sing a selection of traditional hymns and popular songs. They will also include a commemorative section to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings.

“Sally and I rehearsed some of the articles with local schoolchildren. She even wrote a special song for the occasion which she sings beautifully.

“We hope that the revived Sing will be a testament to Kirkburton’s rich musical heritage that we can build on for the future.”

For over 200 years, Kirkburton has celebrated the end of Trinity week with an annual Sing. Villagers dressed in their best clothes and joined together to sing hymns and classical pieces.

By 1883 it was an annual event and was joined by large crowds from other towns and villages.
