A resident of a Cornwall care home is celebrating 101 years

A care home in Cornwall was full of celebration this week as it marked a very special occasion – a resident’s 101st birthday.

Roscarrack House in Falmouth celebrated Hazel’s birthday on Friday 24th May.

Despite undergoing a minor operation the day before her birthday, Hazel was said to be ‘in high spirits’ for her big day.

She was given cards, flowers and a birthday cake and played a selection of games with staff and other care home residents.

Born in Mylor, Hazel’s life has been a remarkable journey. After leaving school, she and her sister embarked on careers as flower pickers.

Hazel then joined the Air Force during the Second World War becoming the WAAF (Women’s Auxiliary Air Force), she was stationed mainly in Wales contributing to the war effort.

Love blossomed for Hazel on a train journey where she met her future husband, a soldier in the Army. Their connection sparked a long-distance romance fueled by letters, eventually leading them to marry and raise a family of three.

Hazel came to Roscarrack House in 2023, just before her 100th birthday.
