One person dies after being sucked into the engine at Schiphol Airport

One person has died at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam after being sucked into a plane’s engine. The horrific incident involved a KLM Cityhopper Embraer E190 preparing for take-off when the person became stuck in the engine. The identity of the victim has not been released.

As the aircraft was pushed back from the stand, ready to head for Denmark, those on board and nearby witnessed the horrific event. The plane was full of passengers at the time of the incident and officials are looking to interview them soon, the Mirror reports.




The NL Times, a local news station, reported that all passengers were evacuated from the plane. The Marechaussee, the military force in charge of airport security, confirmed in a statement that “all passengers and employees of the flight in question have disembarked and are being looked after”.

Footage from the scene showed the KLM aircraft, ready for a flight to Billund, Denmark, surrounded by emergency vehicles as crews rushed to the tarmac.

The VNV pilots union expressed its immediate concern in a statement: “Our first concern and thoughts go out to those involved and their relatives. We offer our cooperation and expertise in investigating the exact cause.”

KLM released a statement: “Today there was a horrific incident at Schiphol in which a person ended up in a running aircraft engine. Unfortunately, the person died. We welcome passengers and employees who saw this at Schiphol. The circumstances are currently being investigated. For more information – as soon as it is available – we are referring to the Royal Military Police.”
