Sam Burgess reveals whether Warrington Wolves will rest players against Wigan Warriors

Warrington Wolves star George Williams will not line up for his side’s match against Wigan Warriors this weekend.

He received a one match ban for Grade B Dangerous Contact as he is at the top end of the class.

A further five grade B charges were handed down, but only resulted in the players being fined £250.

Much has been made of the two sides meeting in a ‘dress rehearsal’ just a week before they meet in the Challenge Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

As a result, some have suggested that the two teams will field a weakened side in the league match to protect star players from injury and fatigue ahead of a huge cup final.

Sam Burgess may now see this as a good opportunity to rest his players, as without Williams, the chance of a win is likely to be lower.

However, of course, the same does not apply to Wigan and Matt Peet, who now have the decision to make themselves.

The Sky pundits clashed recently, with former Saints star Kyle Amor suggesting this was an opportunity to “refresh and recharge” and that Burgess should indeed rest some players.

However, former Leeds man Jamie Jones-Buchanan took a different view, disagreeing, saying the league is still hugely important.

He said: “I think this (game) is massive. If they beat Wigan… that really throws the cat among the pigeons.”

Head coach Sam Burgess was asked if he would rest players for the game in a press conference and said: “We’ve got a few knocks and bruises so we’re not going to expose anyone too much.

“Actually, I’m not trusted in my team, but I’m pretty close to full strength. I think I can be full.

“I’ll probably find out a bit more tomorrow afternoon. We’ll probably call them then. A few guys will have a break, but we’ll try to be as strong as we can.”

Of course, it is exciting for the team to play the team twice in a week, but they have done it before this year, playing London Broncos in the fifth round of the Super League before facing them in the Challenge Cup.

Burgess reflected on his approach to those games: “I don’t think I did it well enough the first time. So, you know, I just took a different approach this week.

“You know, I’ve changed a few things, not drastically, but, you know, I just want to be fresh to run the game next week. So we’ll see how we go.”

Warrington Wolves take on Wigan Warriors for the first time on Saturday 1st June at 3pm at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
