Man shot dead in Birmingham’s Norwood community

A man was shot Wednesday night in Birmingham’s Norwood community.

Authorities have yet to positively identify the victim, but several family members at the scene feared the victim was the brother of another man shot just a year ago.

North Precinct officers responded around 10:10 p.m. to calls of shots fired in and around the 3200 block of 13th Avenue North.

Arriving in the neighborhood, the police found several shell casings in the area. They continued to investigate and a short time later found an unresponsive man in the backyard of a home.

He was pronounced dead by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said details are limited.

“What our patrol officers and detectives know at this point is that neighbors called to report shots fired,” he said. “They canvassed the area and that’s when they found the victim.”

“We have family on site and the family is extremely emotional,” Fitzgerald said. “We understand and hope to learn more about the victim so we can pinpoint exactly what led to his shooting.”

Investigators place 20 to 30 landmarks on the ground. It was not immediately clear how many guns were fired.

“We believe the victim was the target,” he said.

The man is Birmingham’s 58th homicide since 2024. Of those, five have been ruled justifiable and are therefore not considered criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there were 81 homicides, including the 58 in Birmingham.

Anyone with information is asked to call Birmingham homicide detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
