Do not deviate from the diversion, drivers on the M25 are warned – Inside Croydon

This is the warning for motorists who may be affected by the planned closure of the M25 this weekend between junction 9 at Leatherhead and junction 10 at Cobham.

This weekend will see the second of five planned closures of the M25 on sections connecting to junction 10 as part of a £317m project.

The RAC has advised drivers not to rely on SatNavs if directing them to roads where ULEZ applies.

National Highways says anyone who ignores diversion signs while trying to find shorter routes could be hit with a £12.50 daily charge if their vehicle fails to meet emissions standards or face a £180 fine sterling if not paid.

The M25 will be closed in both directions between junctions 9 and 10 from 9pm on Friday 10 May until 6am on Monday 13 May.

It is one of the busiest sections of the London Orbital Expressway, which connects Heathrow and Gatwick airports.

The diversion routes will take cars on a 19-mile journey on A-roads, crossing from Surrey into London’s ultra-low emission zone. “Although the cameras will be active, no enforcement action will be taken,” said Jonathan Wade of National Highways.

“However, if you ignore the diversion signs and do your job, then if your vehicle is not compliant, you risk being caught.”

During this phase of the infrastructure works, concrete beams will be erected for a new bridge and portal.

The previous closure of the M25 took place in March when traffic congestion was not as bad as feared, with many drivers taking alternative routes.

This weekend, Wade said there was a “very real” risk that the previous lack of disruption had caused some drivers to ignore warnings to replan journeys.

Other stretches of the M25 will also be disrupted this weekend due to ongoing work to upgrade additional emergency stop areas on smart sections of motorway.

The next planned closure between junctions 9 and 10 is due to take place in August.
