Sturm Graz could have a double advantage over Sheffield Wednesday in the race for the Arsenal jewel

Sheffield Wednesday are in the race to sign Arsenal gem Mika Biereth. But the Owls could struggle to get a deal done.

Sheffield Wednesday have added January target Mika Biereth back to their summer transfer wishlist following his impressive 2023/24 campaign.

The Danish striker scored six on loan for Motherwell in the first half of the campaign and then five more with Austrian side Sturm Graz, whom he helped win the league title over Red Bull Salzburg.

Both Wednesday and Graz are keen to sign Biereth from Arsenal this summer; The Owls are apparently desperate to make attacking additions with Duncan McGuire back on the radar as well as loan star Ike Ugbo.

But Danny Rohl may have suffered an early setback in a potential bid to sign Biereth this summer, either on loan or on a permanent deal.

Sheffield Wednesday have had a potential setback in the Mika Biereth race

It was claimed on Wednesday that Sturm Graz are unlikely to re-sign Biereth this summer given interest from England.

But now a report from Austrian publication Kronen Zeitung suggests that Sturm Graz believe they can afford a deal for Biereth, who is believed to be on a low salary at Arsenal; SalarySport claim that Biereth earns £4.9-a-week at the Emirates Stadium.

Furthermore, the same report from Kronen Zeitung highlights the ‘asset’ that Sturm Graz have in the race to sign Biereth, namely that they can offer Champions League football after winning the Austrian Bundesliga.

Finally, Kronen Zeitung also say that Mikel Arteta will bring Biereth back to Arsenal for the pre-season tour of the USA, following suggestions earlier in the year that Arteta was considering whether to do so.

Sheffield Wednesday may have their own asset in the Mika Biereth race

On Salary Sport, if Biereth had joined Sheffield Wednesday on a £4,900-a-week deal, he would be the second-lowest paid player, ahead of only Bailey Cadamarteri.

While this has to be taken with a grain of salt, it certainly seems like those wages would be affordable for the Owls, especially after it was recently revealed that Dejphon Chansiri could be planning to spend more on wages than actual transfer fees in this summer.

But the asset of the Champions League may be too much of an obstacle for the Owls. It would be a great opportunity for Biereth; not only to play in the competition itself, but also to showcase themselves.

Expect any deal for Biereth to happen later in the summer, though. Arteta will want to see what the hype is about and there is a chance he could be retained for next season 2024/25, if manages to impress so much.

Sheffield Wednesday, while perhaps not favorites for Biereth, are certainly in the running.
