Manchester United fans have plenty to say as Real Madrid beat Bayern Munich to return to Champions League

Manchester United entered the 2023/24 season optimistic of a major Champions League tilt after a strong cup run in Erik ten Hag’s first season in charge.

While Manchester United drew Bayern Munich in the group stage, opponents Copenhagen and Galatasaray were only expected to make up the numbers. Unfortunately, nothing could be further from the truth.

A disastrous campaign saw United win just one of their six games and slump to the bottom of the group.

Now the competition is down to the final, with United loanee Jadon Sancho taking on Borussia Dortmund, who knocked out Paris Saint-Germain.

They were joined by Real Madrid last night, beating Bayern Munich in a dramatic comeback win.

Real Madrid defeated Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich took the lead in the second half through Alphonso Davies. Then it all went wrong for the German side, who bizarrely substituted Harry Kane.

Former Newcastle and Stoke City striker Joselu then turned the tide with two late goals timed on 88 and 90+1.

Bayern Munich were heartbroken as they were handed the loss of a big Champions League game after conceding two late goals.

Sound familiar? Manchester United fans recognized the striking similarities to 1999, when Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored two late goals to win the trophy and the Treble.

Manchester United fans react to the Champions League semi-final

Manchester United fans have made peace with the team’s exit from the group stage of the competition. We probably would have been destroyed in the knockouts anyway.

Many fans were still watching the dramatic semi-final, with Real now on course to win the trophy for the 15th time.

One fan wrote on X: “25 years since 1999 tonight Bayern conceded late in Spain and were knocked out of the Champions League. Poetry.”

Another added: “Bayern invoking the spirit of 1999 in the final minutes.”

And a third fan wrote: “Bayern get another dose of 1999.”

Another fan reflected on the success of Jude Bellingham, a Manchester United player who tried hard to sign in 2020, writing: “Fair play to Bellingham for not choosing United, well advised there young man.”

The other big talking point was Thomas Tuchel, who was minutes away from another Champions League final.

The manager has been linked with United but has come in for a lot of criticism following his substitutions.

One supporter wrote: “Tuchel sends off his most talented strikers with a narrow 1-0 lead This is the least a Manchester United manager could do. He is not him.”

Another added: “Terrible in-game management. Keep him away from Man United at all costs.”
